Trimming, height reduction or width reduction?

These are different requests. Maintenance trimming keeps the existing outline. Height reduction lowers the top. Width reduction brings the sides inward and needs particular care where the green foliage is shallow.

Tell us which result you want rather than simply asking for the hedge to be “cut back”.

Why cutting into brown wood matters

Leylandii does not produce replacement growth from old, bare wood. Cutting the sides beyond the green foliage can therefore leave lasting bare patches.

Most conifers have similar limits, although yew responds differently. A substantial reduction needs to be assessed against the species and the foliage that will remain.

Tall hedges and restricted access

Photographs should show the full height, both sides where accessible and the route into the garden. Mention narrow gates, slopes, neighbouring structures and areas that cannot be reached.

These details help establish an appropriate approach and the scope of the quotation. Waste clearance is included.

Your questions answered.

How often should Leylandii be trimmed?+

Leylandii grows quickly. RHS guidance recommends trimming established Leyland cypress hedges two or three times during the growing season, with timing adjusted to avoid disturbing nesting birds. The suitable schedule also depends on its condition and the finish you want.

Can you reduce an overgrown conifer hedge?+

Enquire about reduction, but the achievable size depends on the species and remaining foliage. Cutting into bare wood can leave permanent gaps.

When should work be scheduled?+

Check thoroughly for active bird nests before cutting. Work that would damage or destroy an active nest must be postponed. Timing should take account of the hedge species, weather and wildlife.
